A Classic Family Christmas at Home, 2001
Looking back at these photos from 2001, it feels like a classic holiday from another era. The morning started with the predictable chaos of opening presents. The kids were up early, tearing through wrapping paper on the floor in front of the fireplace, which was decorated with stockings. Piles of gifts surrounded the Christmas tree, its lights glowing in the early morning.
Much of the day, like any holiday, revolved around the kitchen. I remember prepping the turkey on the island while the bright, flat winter light came in through the big windows. Later, the kids helped make a pie, their small hands working the dough in the pie dish. It was a group effort, messy and essential.
The dogs were, as always, right in the middle of everything. They patiently watched the kids, probably hoping for a dropped scrap of food or a moment of attention. Between the cooking and the presents, there were quiet moments with the kids and the dogs, just being together in the house.
Finally, we all sat down at the formal dining table. It was fully set with our nice china, a big meal, and handwritten place cards for everyone. It was the calm, satisfying end to a full, busy, and happy day at home.
