A Clear August Weekend at Point Lobos

We spent a weekend down the coast in mid-August. The weather was bright and clear, so we spent most of one day walking the trails at Point Lobos. The path follows the rocky shoreline, weaving through stands of cypress and pine trees clinging to the cliffs.

The water was a deep blue, with thick beds of kelp floating near the shore. Some of the larger offshore rocks were completely white, covered with what must have been hundreds of sea birds. We stopped at an overlook and saw a small, protected cove with calm, green water and a dense forest behind it.

From one point, looking inland, we could just make out a white building nestled in the trees on a far-off hill. The highlight, though, was spotting a group of harbor seals hauled out on a low rock, sunning themselves just above the waves. It was a quiet day, just taking in the views.
