Poolside Scenes from a Summer Swim Meet
I spent a hot Saturday in early August at a children's swim meet somewhere in the Bay Area. The sun was bright, reflecting intensely off the blue water of the outdoor pool. The entire pool deck was crowded with teams, parents, and officials, creating a constant buzz of activity and noise.
The young swimmers, all in their matching yellow caps and blue and yellow swimsuits, waited for their events. A coach was always nearby, kneeling to give last-minute instructions, helping with goggles, or offering a final word of encouragement before they stepped up to the starting blocks.
There's a specific kind of focused energy at these events. Between the moments of intense action in the pool, there was a lot of waiting around. The kids huddled together, some looking nervous, others just passing the time. It was a classic summer day centered around the organized chaos of youth sports.
