A Day of Water: Poolside Competition and a Boat Ride
Spent a classic Bay Area summer Sunday in August split between two very different kinds of water. The day started under the hot sun at a swim meet. The air was filled with the sounds of whistles, cheering, and the splash of swimmers hitting the water right at the start of a race. The whole pool deck was packed with parents and teammates watching the events unfold.
Between the chaos of the races, there were quiet moments. Kids in their team swim caps waiting for their turn, getting last-minute advice from a coach. It's a whole world of focused energy, even for the youngest swimmers standing by the lane lines, watching and waiting.
Later in the day, we swapped the chlorinated water of the pool for the bay. The intense, competitive atmosphere gave way to a much calmer feeling out on a boat. The sun was lower and the light was softer. It was a simple, perfect way to wind down after the energy of the morning's competition. Just a day spent on, or in, the water close to home.
