Lighthouse and Waterfall Day on Kauai

A day out to a lighthouse and a waterfall, which on Kauai turns out to be an easy pairing. First stop was Kilauea Point on the north shore, where the lighthouse sits out on its own bluff with the ocean going at the rocks below it. The trade wind was working hard out there — whitecaps well past the point — and the view from the overlook takes in the whole promontory, the road running out along the ridge to the tower. Seabirds all over the cliff face.

Then back south to Wailua Falls, where the river splits into two chutes and drops into a dark pool. A dead tree has wedged itself sideways across the lip of the falls and just hangs there over the drop. Everything around the gorge is green in a way that doesn't happen at home — trees stacked on trees up the hillside behind the falls. Clouds moved in while we were there but never amounted to rain.
