Late November at Home in San Marcos
The house is mid-drift from fall to Christmas right now. Orange tapers are still out on the dining table in the brass candlesticks, but the little red-and-white gnome trees showed up today too, price tag still stuck to one of them — $12.99, gold feet, no argument from me.
The powder room is done, banana-leaf wallpaper floor to ceiling with the old gold mirror against it, and the sign on the wall so nobody can mistake what room they're in. It reads as a jungle in a five-foot space and I like it more every time I walk past.
Clouds moved through in the afternoon but cleared off by evening, and the sun went down straight into the ocean off the back of the hill — no haze, water visible all the way out. Ended the night down at State and Cedar in Little Italy, sky still not fully dark.
