Claire's First Birthday

Claire turned one today, so we did the whole thing at home in Orinda: presents, balloon, cake.

The presents went about how you'd expect at one — more interest in the curling ribbon than in anything under the wrapping paper. Claire sat on the floor working an orange strand of it over for a long while, wide-eyed and very serious about the job.

The cake was chocolate with a red wagon on it and a big pink 1, and a candle to match. We tied the birthday balloon to the high chair. Claire started out looking almost solemn about the slice on the tray, then got both hands around it and grinned through a mouthful. The bib did about half its job. Most of the cake made it in.
