A Still November Day at the Lake

No wind at all. The lake sat flat and the whole hillside of oaks doubled itself in the water — rust and brown mostly, with a few green holdouts near the top and one yellow tree partway down the shore that outshone everything around it.
Most of the trees at the waterline had already dropped their leaves, so the color was all up the slope behind them, and the bare trunks made a dark band between the hill and its reflection. The reeds along the near shore had gone dry and pale, and the asters at my feet were down to seed heads.
I stood there a long while because the surface never broke. The reflection held from one end of the hill to the other, sharper in some stretches than the trees themselves. Hard to leave water that still.
