A Long Weekend of Snow at Home in Tahoe

A quiet mid-January weekend at home. We had a huge amount of snow, piled up everywhere. The first day, the light kept changing over the lake as clouds moved through, with moments of sun breaking out.

The next few days were uniformly grey and still. I went out into the woods where everything was muffled by the fresh powder. The pine trees were heavy with it. It was interesting to see the dark, unfrozen water of the river and smaller lakes cutting through the landscape. On the windless days, the water was like glass, giving back perfect reflections of the snow-covered trees and hillsides.

After days of quiet snowfall, the storm finally cleared out. The last day was cold and cloudless with that deep blue sky you only get at altitude after a storm. We went up to the resort, and the view looking down into the valley was completely clear. You could see the layer of fog sitting low over the lake, with the peaks sharp against the sky in the distance.
