A Pond and a Beach on Tahoe's North Shore

·Placer County, California·#summer#boating#lake life#lake tahoe#sierra nevada
A forest of tall pine trees surrounds a small pond with rocks and green grass under a clear blue sky.

Started the day in the woods, on a trail that opened onto a small pond ringed with grass and granite boulders, a downed pine leaning over the near edge. Ponderosas everywhere, tall enough that you have to crane to find their tops. No one else around.

Then down to the lake for the rest of the day. The beach was busy — a long line of boats moored past the buoys, a red one standing out in the row, jet skis coming and going off the dock. Wind kept the water choppy most of the afternoon, small waves actually breaking on the sand, which never stops being strange on a lake.

Stayed through dinner near the cabana row and watched the sun drop behind the ridge across the water. Later the wind quit entirely and the whole shore went flat and glassy, the moored boats barely moving. Placer County has been on maps since the Gold Rush, 1851, and it's easy to see why people never left.
