Mid-May Weekend on Burt Lake
Mid-May weekend up on Burt Lake, in Burt Township, Michigan. The water was clear enough near shore to see straight down to the bottom, that green over the shallows before it drops off into blue. Still too cold to swim, obviously, but the boat was in.
We took the Chris-Craft out through the channel, trees close on both sides, then out where it opens up. Passed a marshy stretch with birds nested down in the reeds — swans, I think, though we didn't get close enough to be sure. Stopped at a white church with a green steeple on the way, tall spruce out front loaded with cones.
The next day turned grey and the wind came up off the lake, so it was sweatshirts and the fire pit chairs on the lawn instead. Sand blowing around a little on the beach. The dock and the boat lift are in for the season, which is most of what needs to be true this time of year.
