A Monkey-Themed Birthday Party at Home

We gathered at home on a Saturday in mid-July 2011 for a birthday celebration. The day was relaxed, starting with quiet moments before all the guests arrived. Some of the kids huddled together in a chair to read a new book, pointing at the illustrations. The living room was full of colorful balloons and a growing pile of gifts.

The main event for the kids, besides the cake, was opening presents. We all sat on the floor amid a sea of wrapping paper. There was a blue globe balloon that was a particular hit. I remember helping to unwrap a few things, with the other children looking on with curiosity.

Finally, it was time for the cake. It was a bright turquoise confection with a monkey face on top, set on a floral tablecloth. The birthday girl sat in her high chair, plate at the ready, as everyone watched the cake being cut. It was a simple, lovely day celebrating with family and friends.
