Presents happened in the corner chair, with an older friend helping tear the paper, which mostly meant the two of them tugging at it together. Books went over well: as soon as one was unwrapped it had to be read right there on a lap before the next gift could happen, everyone pointing at the pages. A blue ball with sea animals on it, a fairy set, balloons rolling around underfoot the whole time.

The cake was teal with red dots and the monkey face done in frosting, and the birthday kid could not keep hands off it — one finger in before it was even cut. There was a bottle of milk standing by on the table, which felt about right for turning this age.
