September Evening on the Lake Tahoe Shore

Two children play on a rocky lake beach with a boat house, pier, and distant mountains under a colorful sunset sky.

Drove down from Truckee for a September evening on the lake. The water was flat almost the whole time, hardly a wake anywhere, and the boats on their buoys near the old blue boathouse barely moved.

Walked the rocky stretch of shore first, then out onto the long pier, which had a small crowd on it — umbrellas up, flags on the mast, everyone loitering the way people do out there when the mountains across the water go hazy and purple. Nobody seemed in a hurry to head back in, us included.

By the time we came off the pier the clouds over the trees behind the boathouse had gone orange and the water had picked up a little chop. First evening that actually felt like September instead of August.
