A Quiet Trip to a Northern Shore

We got away for a couple of days in late June. The sky was a solid, even grey the whole time, which gave everything a very soft and quiet light. The water was glassy and still, with almost no waves, just a gentle lap against the sand. Lines of rocks poked out from the shallows, leading the eye out to the flat horizon where the water met the low clouds.

The main activity was walking the dog along the beach. It’s a long, curving stretch of sand backed by a thick wall of pine trees. He was happy to trot along the water's edge, sniffing at whatever the lake had left behind. There was hardly anyone else around, just a few lines of birds floating far out on the water, looking like small dark shapes against the grey.

On the way out of the area, we passed this giant fish sculpture. It looked like a sturgeon, mounted on a big pile of rocks in a small grassy area. It was a slightly strange and memorable landmark after spending two days looking at nothing but water, sand, and trees.
