A Weekend of Music in Elk Rapids, Michigan
Made a trip up to Elk Rapids for the weekend around the summer solstice. It felt like a proper arrival in northern Michigan, complete with the obligatory photo next to a large bronze bear statue tucked into the woods. The weather was mild, perfect for a late June getaway.
The main event, though, was indoors. We went to see a youth percussion ensemble perform in a spacious, modern concert hall. The stage was packed wall-to-wall with an incredible collection of instruments: rows of marimbas and vibraphones, timpani, drum kits, congas, and dozens of smaller pieces I couldn't name. It was an impressive sight even before the music started.
Dressed in black, the group of young musicians played with incredible focus and energy. They moved seamlessly between complex arrangements, their mallets a blur over the instruments. The sound filled the entire space. From the first note to their final bow, it was clear how much work had gone into the performance. It was a really specific and powerful way to spend a summer evening up north.
