Fishing Trip on the San Francisco Bay

Out the door from Walnut Creek in the dark for a fishing trip on the bay. The city lights were still on across the water when the boat pulled out, and by the time we cleared the Golden Gate the sky had gone flat gray and the swell picked up.

The gulls found us fast and never left. Every time the wake churned up they'd drop in behind the stern, sometimes close enough to nearly land on the rail. A couple of pelicans joined later, gliding along at eye level like they had nowhere else to be.

We worked the water off the Marin headlands most of the day. The fog sat right on top of the ridgeline and never burned all the way off, so the cliffs stayed lit underneath it, all that bare rock dropping straight to the water. Rods out, chain and anchor rattling around the deck between spots.

Coming back in, the bridge appeared through the haze long before we reached it, and then we passed right under the south tower, close enough to look straight up through the cables.
