A group of children and adults gathered by a swimming pool with starting blocks on a sunny day.

Drove down for a Saturday morning swim meet at Orange Pool, the city facility at 1 West Orange Avenue in South San Francisco. Whatever lap swimmers use the place at 7:15 had cleared out by the time heats started, and the deck belonged to canopies, pennant strings, and rows of kids in team suits packed in behind the yellow starting blocks.

Our girl posed with her mom by the dive pool first, navy-and-yellow suit, an event number inked on her arm, then disappeared into the marshaling crowd. When her heat went off she came down the lane in a kind of head-up crawl, yellow cap and orange goggles, mouth open for air every couple of strokes, but she kept moving the whole way.

She finished under the timer's pole and hung on the wall, goggles still on, catching her breath while the next heat lined up behind her.
