A Sunny Saturday at a Summer Swim Meet
It was the first day of June, a perfect, sunny Saturday for a swim meet somewhere in the Bay Area. The pool deck was crowded with families, swimmers, and coaches, with pop-up tents scattered around for shade. The whole scene had the familiar, chaotic energy of a youth sporting event.
The kids, in their bright caps and suits, waited for their events. I saw one girl with her races written on her arm and back in marker—a classic swim meet sight. They held hands, whether for a relay team or just for moral support, as they were herded toward the starting blocks.
The air smelled of sunscreen and chlorine. Parents lined the edges of the pool, trying to get a good view of the lanes. Coaches stood by with clipboards and stopwatches, offering last-minute words of encouragement before the swimmers took their marks.
Amidst all the activity, there were quiet moments of success. After a race, two girls posed for a picture, one proudly holding up a blue 'Winner' ribbon. It was a long, bright day filled with short bursts of speed in the cool water.
