A Sunday at the Pool for a Summer Swim Meet
A Sunday in late June spent at an outdoor pool somewhere in the Bay Area for a swim meet. The day was overcast and cool enough for jackets, a typical summer day around here. The pool deck was crowded with kids, coaches, and parents, all focused on the lanes of bright blue water.
Most of a swim meet isn't the racing itself, but the waiting in between. We watched one of the younger swimmers in her yellow cap and team suit go through the motions. There were serious talks with coaches, pre-race stretches, and long moments spent just watching the other heats go by.
It’s a very structured environment, but there are small, personal moments. A quick wave to someone on the sidelines, a moment of focus before getting on the block. After one race, the coach was there waiting with high-fives for all the kids climbing out of the pool, regardless of how they placed. It's a long day of hurry-up-and-wait, but it seems to be its own self-contained world.
