A Saturday Night Out with Friends in Grand Rapids

A late winter night out in Grand Rapids, March 22, 2003. A group of us found our way to a dimly lit spot with exposed brick walls and dark leather couches. It was the kind of place you could settle into for a few hours.

I had my camera out from the start, grabbing photos as people paired off and posed. The flash is harsh, but it captures the smiles. We eventually gathered around a small table, drinks in hand, and the mood was light. You can see it in the pictures of the three women laughing together; the low light of the bar makes everything feel close and warm.

It was a pretty typical Saturday night—nothing momentous, just an easy get-together. The photos are a simple document of that. Posing for a few pictures, sharing some laughs over drinks. Just a good, uncomplicated evening spent with friends before heading back out into the cold.
