A Snowy Halloween Weekend in Truckee
Halloween at the house in Truckee, with snow still on the ground in patches from earlier in the week.
Costumes came together in two waves. The girls went full witch — one in black with purple striped tights, the other in a purple corset and a hat with a spider-web point taller than the doorway. She held up one finger for most of the pictures and I don't know why. Later the other pair turned up as Raven and Beast Boy, which meant a purple velvet cloak and a full face of green paint that got onto his hands and probably onto the hoodie.
Everyone lined up under the pumpkin banner by the Salem Broom Co. sign before heading out, which is becoming the spot for it whether anyone plans it or not.
After dark we walked out among the pines — a house down the way had everything lit in orange and purple, trees glowing all the way up their trunks, little groups of people moving between them. Cold enough to feel like actual Halloween for once.
The green paint is going to be in that hoodie forever.
