A Spring Trip to the Castles of Oberbayern, Germany
We spent a few days in early April near Weilheim in Oberbayern, taking advantage of the clear spring weather. The sky was a brilliant blue, which made the views of the snow-capped Alps even more striking.
Our first stop was Hohenschwangau Castle, the bright yellow castle perched on a hill. We took a family photo by the Alpsee, with the mountains reflecting perfectly in the calm water. The air was crisp, and the trees were still mostly bare from winter.
From the area around Hohenschwangau, we got some incredible views of the more famous Neuschwanstein Castle. It looked just like the pictures, a white fairytale castle set against the dark green forests and rocky mountain peaks. The landscape from this vantage point was vast, with the lake below and the mountains stretching out in the distance.
We also drove to another nearby lake, which had stunningly clear turquoise water. We walked along the rocky shoreline, and you could see some ice lingering on the far side. It was quiet and a great way to just take in the scale of the mountains surrounding us.
