A Unicorn Birthday Party, October 2010
This was a mid-October weekend in 2010, and the house was full of small children for a birthday party. We gathered them around a big wooden table with colorful plates, snacks, and a few toys to keep them occupied. It was a classic kids' party scene, full of chatter and little bursts of energy between bites of food.
For entertainment, we had a homemade version of pin the tail on the donkey. I'd drawn a big unicorn on poster board and taped it to a wood-paneled wall. A bright pink blindfold was tied on, and a few slightly wobbly attempts were made to pin the tail in the right spot. After the game, we managed to get all the girls to line up for a group photo in front of the unicorn cutout.
The cake was the highlight, of course. A pink-frosted creation with a unicorn and a big sugar rainbow on top. Once the candles were lit and blown out, we cut into it to reveal that the inside was made of rainbow-colored layers, which got a pretty great reaction from the birthday girl.
