Birthday party today at the place on Diamond Street in Glen Park, unicorn theme all the way through. Six girls around a low table with pizza and cups of play-dough, which held their attention about as long as anything holds a room of preschoolers.

The main event was pin-the-tail on a big paper unicorn taped to the wall — white body, purple mane, wings. The birthday girl went up blindfolded in a pink bandana and got her tail somewhere near the neck, which is closer than most. After the games they lined all six up against the wall next to the unicorn for a picture, barefoot, one in ladybug rain boots.

Cake came later, back at the house. Buttercream on the outside with her name piped in pink, a plastic unicorn under a rainbow arch on top. The good part was the cut: six layers inside, one for each color, and she stood next to it with her fist in her mouth like she couldn't believe it was hers.
