A Week of Passing Showers and Whale Sightings

It rained off and on most days this week in February. The kind of quick showers that would pass through, leaving behind these incredibly vibrant rainbows that arched over the water and the distant mountains. You could almost set your watch by them.

On one of the clearer days, I went for a hike inland. With all the recent rain, the waterfalls were flowing strong. The air was heavy and damp, and everything was intensely green, deep in the valleys away from the coast. It’s a different world back there.

The clouds did make for some interesting light in the evenings. The sunsets were often dramatic, with the sun breaking through gaps in the cloud cover just before it disappeared. I watched one from the porch, framed by the silhouette of a palm frond.

We also got out on the water. It's that time of year when the whales are here, and we saw quite a few. It’s hard to capture the scale of them from a moving boat. Mostly you just catch a glimpse of a dorsal fin or a back slicing through the water before they're gone again.
