San Diego Weekend, Campus to the Coast

Started the San Diego weekend up north of the city, on a bluff trail above the beach — houses built right to the lip, a long line of palms behind them, surfers still coming out of the water mid-morning. From up there you could see the sand running south until it disappeared into haze.

Midday was San Diego State. Hepner Hall with its whitewashed bell gable over the red tile roof, Hardy Memorial Tower rising behind a big peeling eucalyptus, and students out front in dresses taking turns posing on the walkway. The whole old core of campus is the same mission style, arch after arch.

Finished on the Coast Walk Trail at La Jolla Cove. The cliffs are Cretaceous sandstone, up to about 116 feet at Goldfish Point, and the faces were packed with nesting cormorants — dozens of them dotted down the rock like nails. The low wall along the path was commissioned by Ellen Browning Scripps to make the cove safer for children; the trail keeps going from there toward Seal Rock and the Children's Pool. The sun went down behind the pines on the point while the cormorants stayed put.
