An Early February Hike Among the Redwoods

A quiet few days at home at the turn of the month, from the end of January into early February. I took the opportunity for a long walk in one of the nearby redwood forests. It's always a humbling experience to stand at the base of these trees and look up; they seem to go on forever, and the world at ground level is cool and dark.

The first shot I took that day was black and white, which felt right for the initial mood of the forest—all texture and scale. As I walked further, the afternoon sun began to angle through the canopy.

It was fascinating to watch the light change. It came through in distinct beams, catching the high branches and illuminating patches of the forest floor. The entire character of the grove shifted, from imposing and shadowy to something more detailed and alive. Just a simple hike, but a good way to spend an afternoon.
