Baseball and the Arch in St. Louis

Cardinals–Brewers at Busch Stadium, seats out in left field near the foul pole. Gray clouds sat on the place all evening and the lights were on well before dark. Half the crowd had hoods up, and a fan a few rows over wore a Pujols 5 jersey like he'd never left for Anaheim. From our angle you get the whole panorama — the Budweiser sign over the scoreboard, Big Mac Land off the shoulder, the downtown towers behind the outfield wall.

The sky went the other direction overnight, so before leaving town we walked over to the Gateway Arch. 630 feet — tallest arch in the world, tallest monument in the country — Saarinen's stainless steel catenary, started in 1963, finished in 1965, standing on the west bank of the Mississippi to mark westward expansion. Standing at the base you tilt your head back and the curve keeps going past where you expect it to stop. The grounds underneath were torn up with construction, an excavator parked between the young trees.
