Bay Crossings Ferry Day and the Little Farm

Tickets came from Bay Crossings, the shop tucked into the Ferry Building that sells paper ferry tickets along with postcards and maps — Shop 22, right where the commuters funnel through. Then out onto the bay under a gray ceiling that never fully broke up.

From the water you get the Bay Bridge from both sides: the suspension span running back into the city, and around Yerba Buena Island the cantilever half with construction cranes standing over the new span work. The whole northern waterfront slid past after that — Coit Tower and the Transamerica Pyramid, Russian Hill, the Fort Mason piers, Sutro Tower with its legs in the trees, and finally the Palace of Fine Arts dome sitting in front of the Presidio eucalyptus.

Second half of the day went across the bay to the Little Farm in Tilden Park. Red barn, windmill with the farm's name painted on a vane, kids stacked along the fences. A blue-gray cow grazed right up near the rail, dried mud caked down its back legs, and never once lifted its head.
