Fourth of July at the park, and the whole lawn was given over to inflatables — a princess castle with a slide, an obstacle course, a dalmatian one with the rental company's phone number stretched across its forehead. The little one went at the bounce house hard, all pink from tank top to shorts, laughing too much to stand up straight in there. Later the same kid appeared at the top of the castle slide between the two purple towers, and a couple of the older men stationed themselves at the bottom just in case.

Older kids were running loose across the grass with a ball, bikes dropped in the shade, folding chairs pulled up wherever people wanted them.

The splash pad was the last stop. Big green arch spraying water, bigger boys hogging the middle of it, and the little one circling the edge in a wet swimsuit, working up to walking through. Barefoot on the concrete the whole time, which had to be hot by then.
