Contrasts in Tokyo: Zojoji Temple and Tokyo Tower

My first few days in Tokyo were in mid-March. The initial impression is always the scale of everything—the crowds of people moving through the streets, the buildings layered with ads and signs under a bright, hazy sky. It's a lot to take in all at once.

The area around Shiba Park offered a stark contrast. One night, I saw the Zojoji Temple quietly illuminated, with the massive, glowing Tokyo Tower standing directly behind it. It’s a classic juxtaposition of old and new that you see in photos, but it's different standing there in the cold night air.

I went back during the day to see the temple grounds. The trees were still bare for the most part, but the sun was out. The most striking sight was the hundreds of small Jizo statues lined up in rows, each with a small red cap and a colorful pinwheel. In the bright daylight, the red and white lattice of the Tokyo Tower seemed to loom over everything. Stepping inside the temple's main hall, the city outside disappeared. It was dark and peaceful, the space focused entirely on the ornate, golden altar.
