New Year's Eve in Marina del Rey
Flew down from Truckee to close out the year in Marina del Rey. Downtown LA was visible from the plane on the way in, poking up out of a flat grey sprawl of warehouse roofs, and then we were on the ground and it was seventy degrees warmer than what we left.
The room looked straight down onto the marina — hundreds of masts, and behind them the Santa Monica Mountains with big clouds stacked over the ridge from whatever storm had just moved through. We mostly stayed put. Drinks in the lounge in the afternoon, dinner along the boardwalk under the palms, and back up before dark.
By the time it was properly night the whole basin had lit up, boats trailing colored light on the water, the apartment blocks across the channel glowing. Last view of 2023, sailboats and all.
