Halloween 2016: Vikings and Care Bears. The girls went full Viking this year — one in the fur-and-armor getup with face paint striped across her cheeks, the other with a pink streak in her hair and a wooden shield nearly as big as she is. They held their warrior scowls through most of the posing on the front step, though the scowls didn't survive the last round.

The Care Bear half was mine. Felt symbol circles on t-shirts and paper-ear headbands, ten of us lined up in every color at work. I was Wish Bear, green ears and a shooting star.

The dog got stuffed into a bumblebee costume and sat by the jack-o-lanterns looking betrayed. One of the pumpkins got carved into a skull this year, the other into something with a snout — nobody will confirm whether it's a pig on purpose.
