Watching a Rainbow Form Over the Lake

We had a storm roll through in mid-October, and spent a good part of the week just watching the weather change from inside. The wind kicked up whitecaps on the lake, and the view through the window was constantly streaked with raindrops.

Then, as the rain started to let up one afternoon, a rainbow began to form over the far shore. It was faint at first, barely visible against the dark gray clouds and mountains. It seemed to appear and fade for a bit as the light shifted.

For a few minutes, though, the sun must have broken through just right. The colors became incredibly vibrant, a full, perfect arch that looked like it was dropping straight into the water between the pines. We just stood and watched it from the window. It was the most dramatic thing that happened all week.

Just as quickly as it appeared, the light changed again and the rainbow faded back into the clouds, leaving just the gray sky and the choppy water.
