Into San Francisco for a postseason game at AT&T Park — Giants and Cardinals, the league championship series. The crowd was backed up all the way through the Willie Mays Gate, red-white-and-blue bunting hung on everything that could hold it.

Before first pitch they unrolled an American flag that covered most of the outfield, a line of people holding the edge all the way from the left field line around to right. Behind it you could see the Bay Bridge past the Coke bottle and the big glove, which never stops being a strange thing to see from a ballpark seat.

By the time things got going the whole lower bowl was a wall of orange rally rags. Our seats were down the first base line, close enough to watch the coach at first the whole game. It ran well past dark under the lights, and nobody in our section sat down much after the middle innings.
