Ringing in the New Year on Snow
First day of 2019, and we rang in the New Year on snow, all four of us. Before anyone got into ski clothes there was couch time with the dogs — the little papillon burrowed in and refused to be put down, and the big one climbed straight into a lap that wasn't offered.
On the drive the clouds were banked right along the Sierra crest, snow down low on the peaks, sagebrush still bare and gold in the valley. Then up the hill. Two of us on skis, our daughter on the snowboard, and she spent about as much time sitting in the snow as riding on it — strapped into the Flow board, flat on her back, grinning every single time. The other one skied circles around all of us.
We got one picture of the four of us together in helmets and goggles before the last runs. Nobody's face is really visible. It still counts.
