A Saturday Morning at the Swim Meet
It was a bright, sunny Saturday in late May, the kind of day that feels like the real start of summer. We spent the day at a local pool for a kids' swim meet. The whole scene is a familiar one: families camped out in pop-up tents, the smell of sunscreen, and the constant echo of splashes and whistles.
There's a lot of waiting around for your heat to be called. Then it's a sudden burst of focus and activity. Getting a last-minute pep talk, stepping up onto the starting block, and waiting for the signal. The moment of the dive is quick, followed by the frantic energy of the race itself, churning through the bright blue water while parents and teammates cheer from the deck.
Once the race is over, it's back to the side of the pool for hugs and a warm towel. The whole day is built around these short, intense moments of competition. It felt like a classic suburban weekend, with the entire community gathered around the water.
